Why is Research Blogging important?

We’re constantly working to increase the profile of ResearchBlogging.org and the blogs we represent. We think it’s critically important — for scientists, for journals, for students, and for the lay readers.

To do that, one of the things we need to do is communicate our message to other organizations: Journals, libraries, news-gathering organizations, and potential funding sources. We have some ideas about why what we do matters, but we also want to know why it’s important to you: Why do you think blogging about peer-reviewed research is important for science?

    Hardcore science is often inaccessible to the general public, but projects like research blogging can fill that gap. With requirements that it be about peer-reviewed research, most of the people blogging probably know what they’re talking about and are able accurately represent the research. Science reporting in the mainstream media purports to fill the same connection between science and the public, but often does so in a watered-down or blatantly inaccurate way. If ResearchBlogging.org can avoid doing that, it can be a powerful way to spread information gathered through science.

    Phronk makes good points. In addition, when mainstream media does report accurately on research they almost never bother to link to the paper in question even if it’s free online. Since bloggers will link to journal articles and to other blogs’ posts on the subject, even a well-done mainstream news article isn’t really providing the same service as a blog post.

    I fully agree with the statements above, but would like to add to this the possibility to blog about more than a single article at once. This allows writers to make comparisons, point out errors or improvements and zoom in to these aspects.

    Although this sure is possible in a newspaper, this rarely the case. And, arent’t it these kind of comparisons that make up an important part of what science is all about?

    Speaking of raising profiles, I’m looking to see if there are any official researchblogging.org sidebar badges and/or widgets (preferrably compatible with wordpress.com’s no java rules)

    I can’t find them linked to anywhere obvious, are they hidden (bear in mind it is now 2:00am in my world, so excuse me if this is a stupid question)
