Vincent RacanielloVincent Racaniello selects several notable posts each week from molecular and cellular biology and virology. He blogs at virology blog.

  • Bacteria may live as free cells (planktonic) or banded together in large groups surrounded by a sticky mesh. One of the main ways that bacteria communicate with each other in order to organize such biofilms is by quorum sensing.
  • MicroRNAs may be useful for preventing or treating viral infections. A screen of 300 microRNAs reveals those which enhance or inhibit the replication of herpesviruses, suggesting two different therapeutic approaches.
  • The phosphatidylinositol 3′-kinase (PI3-kinase or PI3K) pathway plays a major role in proliferation and survival in a wide variety of human cancers. ┬áIt is therefore an attractive target for therapeutics to treat the disease.

I’ll be back next Friday with more selections.
