A question about our name

As I’ve been working on the BPR3 project, I’ve naturally been calling it “BPR three,” probably because that’s the domain name we’ve got, and because it’s easier to say than “BPR cubed.” But I know the original conception of the project was supposed to be BPR^3, as in “cubed.”

I think we probably want to let our contest entries help us decide on the exact look of our logo / icon, and therefore we shouldn’t decide on whether it’s “three” or “cubed” right now, but for the benefit of the contest participants, maybe we should have a discussion about whether to call the organization “BPR three” or “BPR cubed.” That way, when the contest is formally launched (we’re shooting for Friday), entrants will have some sense as to what our community prefers.

Any thoughts / ideas on how BPR3 should be pronounced / presented? Let us know in the comments.

I’ve always read it as it’s typed: BPR-three.

Good luck to those participating in the logo contest. The work I’ve seen so far is great.

Change the name. It’s terrible. If your are discussing the myriad ways it can be pronounced, you know it is bad.

Try your damnedest to think as an outsider when you look at a name. What does BPR3 mean to someone who sees your name for the first time? Absolutely nothing. You just lost a chance to make an impact on that person. Now you’re stuck having to explain what in means.

These guys have some great stuff when it comes to naming: igorinternational.com

The icon looks like bad clip art, but I wouldn’t waste time on that until you fix the name.

Great idea though; you just need to put a little thought into branding.

    Patrick,

I’m sure there are lots of better names out there. But finding a name AND a domain name to go with it is not a simple task. This name says what we are, and it’s got an easy to use URL.

We’re certainly concerned with branding, but we’d also like to get this project moving quickly. We’re a group of volunteers, and we don’t have the budget or the time to sit down with a bunch of consultants and hem and haw about a brand name for months on end.

That said, if you have a better idea for a name AND domain to go with it, I do hope you’ll share. It’s not too late to change, but it will be soon.
