That seems to be one of the most common questions I get regarding rehabilitation of the shoulder. It seems like clinicians want to know how everyone else is rehabilitation their patients following rotator cuff repair surgery. My guess is because most people feel that their physicians are too restrictive in their postoperative guidelines? Does that sound like you? Lancet recently published a systemic review looking at routine imaging for Low Back Pain (LBP) without "red flags" that would suggest serious underlying conditions (eg, myelopathy, cancer, fracture, etc). A recent review from the January 2009 issue of the Journal of Arthroscopy reviewed the use of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for knee osteoarthritis. Earlier in my PT career I often called B.S. on forms of treatment that didn't seem to pass the smell test. The October 2008 issue of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning has an impressive review article of the anatomy, function, assessment, and strengthening of the gluteus medius from a group of clinicians in New Zealand. The authors do a good job reviewing some of the basic anatomy and function of the muscle and relating this information to research reports looking at dysfunction and treatment of the muscle for several lower extremity injuries. It is common practice for physical therapists to include an assessment of the posterior glenohumeral joint capsule in patients with shoulder pain. The rationale is that a tight posterior capsule may exert a "Diablo" effect on the proximal humerus and reducing the subacromial space.
